Avalon School Reviews

It's quite simple, really. This is the best school I ever attended. Overcrowding isn't an issue here. I recieve individual attention, and, although this hardly seems important, there is plenty of time to eat lunch. Sometimes, it's the details that make a school. It's details that make this school for sure.

The teachers are nice, smart, and understanding. I like the way they teach me and the small class sizes. I always had a lot of problems at other schools, but I have had few problems that were solved faster then they would've been in normal schools. The teachers and students care about each other. It's a wonderful working enviorment.

Avalon is an amazing school that gives me the freedom to learn in the way that is best for me, but also has just enough structure so I know what work I need to do. I have great relationships with my peers and advisor. I transfered to Avalon my junior year and it was the best decision I've made in my entire academic career. I couldn't have asked for a better school. I LOVE Avalon.

This school is perfect and it has made a world of difference for me- eowyn

I love Avalon, it is a great community for me and anyone who wants to be appreciated for who they are. Education is great and you really are prepared for more than just your middle school/High school experience it goes beyond that. Definitely check it out! =D

Do not overlook this jewel of a school. My daughter transferred to Avalon from a large public high school for the second semester of her junior year. She will be part of the graduating class of 2007! She is now thriving at Avalon. The teachers are intelligent and extremely supportive. They hold realistic expectations for all students, based on the individual. The school community offers a unique sense of belonging for the students and their families. I see my daughter showing an excitement for learning that has been absent way too long. Her grades have improved significantly and she is now talking about which college she will attend.

The most impressive thing about Avalon is that EVERY student is truly honored for who they are individually. My daughter struggled with the anonymity of a large public high school. She was not born organized and motivated to succeed. Avalon honors her for the unique person she is, allows her to be her best self, and encourages her to be more than she imagines. Her school experience is nice mix of mentoring, individual project-based learning, Avalon seminars that resemble college classes, community involvement, relatively traditional math classes, and opportunities to access post secondary options. The variety of learning vehicles is teaching her to be unafraid of curiosity, to be responsible in many settings, and to manage time with completion in mind. She will have learned all those important college freshman (and life!) lessons before she sets foot on a college campus full time!

After three years at Avolon, my daughter has developed into a highly respectful and responsible girl who is handling her work at Avalon and additional classes at the Univ. of MN well. She wants to be a positive influence in the world. The teachers at Avalon are passionate about giving the students the tools and space to learn.

Avalon saved my son's academic career. After being lost in the system at a large city highschool, the faculty and staff helped him become a school leader. He went from hating school to loving it. Everyone involved with Avalon gives their heart and soul. Parent involvement is the 'norm' here, and students learn how to help themselves and each other. I can't say enough about this special place.

Avalon School is a great learning environment for students who are self-motivated. It has a structure that is supportive to the student who can take the initiative for learning. It is also a positive environment for students who benefit from a variety of learning styles and methods for testing learning. It is project-based and can therefore speak to the student's strengths in learning rather than provide a cookie cutter style that expects everyone to fit one mold. There is a very supportive environment--from the teachers to the administrative staff to the parents--which promotes active student involvment in every facet of their education. Lastly, students are encouraged to think beyond their boundaries; to become actively involved in the world and their communities.

As the parent of a recent graduate, I can say in hindsight that my child continues to read and explore passionately some of the topics and interests that were able to be identified, nurtured and .. well, unleashed ... at Avalon. My child, a creative, independent, self-motivated individual, was stifled at a regimented large high school and clearly found a niche here -- taking ownership of the educational process and learning organizational, research and time-management skills that will continue on through life. Here is a school where uniqueness is valued, not punished or ostracized! It goes without saying that I have the highest regard for the staff, as well.

I love the school. The staff are very understanding, hard working and dedicated!

Fantastic environment for individual learning in a school community made up of kids and teachers that love their school and want to be there. Our daughter is able to be involved in projects and activities that she has genuine interest in. The result is a motivated student with a great sense of pride and desire to do her best. Avalon parents are given the opportunity to be very involved in this smaller charter school. I think the Avalon staff and administration do a great job of reaping the benefits of a small school and still taking advantage of the big city opportunity that surrounds it.

I have had two kids at Avalon since 9th grade. They are now seniors. They struggled at large public schools but Avalon has been a fabulous experience. They are learning discipline, goal setting, and responsibility. Academic standards are very high and students are expected to perform to their abilities. They have been able to pursue their own interests, which has made them excited about learning. Teachers are patient and helpful but they never let the kids take the easy way; they insist on quality work. I highly recommend this school for creative students who want to stand out instead of being one of the crowd.

My daughter is currently a senior at Avalon --- having spent her entire high school education there. She herself considers her decison to attend Avalon the best choice she has ever made! I have seen her grow from a shy child into a community leader. She is excited and motivated about learning. She has learned to take responsibility for her own education. The staff are incredible! As a parent, I feel a part of the community. I have served on hiring committees and am part of the parent association. I feel the staff and students are very accessible, respectful and inclusive. I love this school! Although it is going through a transition right now--- adding the Middle School --- and the redefining that entails --- the added stress on the advisors --- This school isn't for everybody -- I think it is for students who love to learn or want to learn to become self motived learners -----

Wonderful place for college bound students. Great philosophy! Great teachers! My daughter is succeeding after being lost and disillusioned in our way too large publich schools. There is much individual attention at Avalon and work on bettering student's self-esteem. It's also flexible which has helped my daughter as well. High level of parent involvement. The service learning opportunities also led to my daughter's career choice. Many students go on to college from this school.
